Kraton Showcases Injection Molded Soft Skin Technology for Automotive Industry

HOUSTON – January 10, 2018 Kraton Corporation (NYSE: KRA), a leading global producer of styrenic block copolymers, specialty polymers and high-value performance products derived from pine wood pulping co-products, will demonstrate the new Kraton Injection Molded Soft Skin (IMSS) technology capabilities on January 15-19 at the Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering plant in Rochester Hills, MI. This technology enables manufacturers to mold a large thin wall soft skin product design, opening the market to larger applications including door panels, consoles and instrument panels as thin as 0.8mm.

The Kraton IMSS technology can be used on standard equipment and under normal processing conditions, using both skin-only and over-molded injection molding processes.


The technology also enables:

  • System level cost savings when compared to slush molding,
  • Injection molding of large thin-wall parts,
  • Vehicle weight savings,
  • Excellent aesthetics, so no painting is required to hide weld lines and blemishes,
  • Softer, warmer surface, improving the interior’s perceived value,
  • Improved aging, fogging, VOC and odor performance, and
  • Compliance with OEM performance specification without painting of the class “A” surface.

The IMSS product’s foundation is the use of Kraton™ TPE technologies, which deliver many performance benefits including very high flow properties for thin wall molding; excellent cold temperature flexibility, even after long-term heat aging and weatherometer testing; aesthetically-acceptable soft surface without the need for painting; and minimal plasticizer loading, resulting in globally-acceptable VOC and odor performance.
