Kraton Showcases SYLVATRAXX™ Tread Enhancement Additives at Tire Technology Expo
Company presents research on TEA and its effect on tire tread compounds

HOUSTON – February 5, 2019 Kraton Corporation (NYSE: KRA), a leading global producer of styrenic block copolymers, specialty polymers and high-value performance products derived from pine wood pulping co-products, will exhibit at the Tire Technology Expo 2019 on March 5-7 in Hannover, Germany. Located at Booth C230, the company will showcase natural, synthetic and hybrid solutions including SYLVATRAXX 5212, SYLVATRAXX 5216 and SYLVATRAXX 5281 Tread Enhancement Additives (TEA).

“As a leading TEA supplier for the tires industry, Kraton is committed to delivering innovations that create exceptional value for our customers’ long-term growth,” said Nicolas Derville, Kraton’s Business Director – Tires. “Our SYLVATRAXX™ portfolio enables manufacturers to improve performance through safer mobility, eco-mobility and more environmentally-friendly solutions.”

Jochem Vervelde, Kraton’s technical associate, will give a technical presentation on Wednesday, March 6 about “The Influence of Tread Enhancement Additives on the Performance of Filled Tread Compounds – An Insight into the Effect of SYLVATRAXX.” The session is listed under Stream 7, which focuses on sustainability developments within tire material science.

Kraton TEA have been used for more than 15 years to influence the viscoelastic properties of passenger car radial (PCR) tire compounds. With the ban of distilled aromatic extract oil in certain regions, Kraton additives became the product of choice for customers looking to compensate for the loss of properties using alternative oils. With a versatile range adapted to various chemistry and physical properties of the tire compounds, Kraton TEA offer various benefits for PCR tires including winter, ultra-high performance and all-season.

Recent developments have led to a range of modified terpene SYLVATRAXX TEA designed with high softening point, low polarity and low molecular weight. These grades have shown to provide better compatibility than hydrocarbon-based TEA with similar glass transition temperatures, and offer enhanced PCR compound performance parameters. Using a proprietary model blend technology, Kraton can screen for TEA compatibility with the polymer matrix and link it to enhanced performance in filled tread compounds.
