High-Performance Biobased Oils

SYLVASOLV oils can be used as plasticizers in coatings to optimize elasticity, hardness, adhesion to substrates and dry-film appearance.

Coatings Applications

Rounded Building with Unique Architecture
Architectural

Waterborne coatings have provided the industry with a sustainable, biobased alternative to fossil-based resins. With the development of alkyd emulsions for architectural applications, bio-based raw materials with good film properties are now achievable with a lower carbon footprint.

Traditional high solids solvent-borne alkyds for exterior usage formulated with SYLFAT™ TOFA benefit from its improved drying times, hardness in combination with low carbon footprint that is 100% biobased.

General Industry

Several technologies, from traditional short oil alkyds, epoxy binder systems, or more complicated hybrid PU resin-based coatings, benefit from pine-based building blocks such as SYLFAT™ TOFA, SYLVATAL™ Distilled Tall Oil, and Dimer Acids.

Heavy Duty Containers

Toughness, cost efficiency, and a sustainable raw material base have become increasingly crucial for heavy-duty applications. Both solvent-borne and water-borne coatings technology can benefit from pine-based building blocks to deliver the right combination of properties looked after. Biobased renewable raw materials are the better choice for long-term sustainable coatings solutions.

Plasticizer

SYLVASOLV oils are 100% biobased additives used as plasticizers in epoxy and polyurethane-based protective coatings to optimize elasticity, hardness, adhesion to substrates, and dry-film appearance. These oils are a non-flammable, sustainable option to reduce glass transition temperature and increase plasticity and fluidity to enable proper film formation.

SYLVASOLV oils are ideal for metal and concrete protective coatings, epoxy based coatings, and polyurethane based coatings.

Chemistries

SYLVATAL™ products contain 10-40 percent rosin acids, combining the advantages of fatty acids and rosin acids – making them an ideal raw material for functional products. SYLVATAL helps improve hardness for indoor varnishes with also providing high-gloss and excellent water and alkali resistance. With the rosin being partially water-soluble, SYLVATAL can also be used in slow-releasing fertilizer/seed coatings.

SYLFAT™ fatty acids are useful in a wide range of industrial applications. These products have a unique degree of unsaturation and fatty acid distribution related to their region of origin. SYLFAT TOFA provides a combination of light color, good color stability and air drying properties. They are used in different binder systems and surfactants to achieve high-performance coating systems.

SYLVAROS™ rosin and disproportionated rosins can manufacture emulsifiers for the polymerization process and pigment coating. It can also be an anchoring agent, improving adhesive properties. With the rosin being partially water-soluble, SYLVATAL is fit for use in slow-releasing anti-fouling coatings as well.

SYLVACOTE™ 7003 resin is a maleic-modified glycerin ester of tall oil rosin used in nitrocellulose coatings for hardness and durability and is found in wood finishing for cabinets and lacquer sealers.
