Roofing

Advancements in the roofing industry are driven by the desire to balance low-cost and long-term sustainable solutions with topics like circularity, resilience, climate change, and performance improvements, further intensifying the need for continuous innovation of modified bituminous roofing materials.

Kraton’s diverse polymer portfolio enables the development of long-lasting, cost-effective roofing products that withstand harsh climates and conditions. Our styrenic block copolymers (SBC) are used in modified bituminous roofing materials to provide critical features such as flexibility across a wide temperature range, resistance to thermal degradation, long-term performance, excellent waterproofing properties, ease of application, and enhanced aesthetics. Our styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS), and styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) polymer modifiers form a strong network within the bitumen, enhancing its physical properties and resulting in superior performance roofing materials.

Typical Kraton Product Grades
  • D1101 and D1184 are the industry benchmark polymers
  • D1101 provides exceptional low-temperature performance
  • D1184 delivers excellent high-temperature resistance
  • D1194 and D1192 provide improved asphalt compatibility and processing efficiency
  • D1191 delivers exceptional high-temperature performance
  • D0243 and D1118 improve tack and wetting of self-adhesive products
  • SIS increases tack in self-adhesive formulations, also at low temperatures
  • SEBS provides outstanding heat and oxidation resistance in uses like hot mopping asphalt binders and air-blown shingle coatings
