Styrenic Block Copolymers (SBCs)

What are Styrenic Block Copolymers?

Styrenic block copolymers (SBCs) are a class of thermoplastic elastomers that consist of blocks of polystyrene and blocks of another elastomeric polymer, typically polybutadiene or polyisoprene. These materials are known for their unique combination of properties derived from the connection of styrenic and elastomeric components, which Kraton invented in the 1950’s.

Components of SBCs:
  1. Block Structure: SBCs are composed of at least two types of polymer blocks linked together. The most common structures are styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS), and hydrogenated versions like styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS).
  2. Styrene Blocks: These blocks are rigid and contribute properties such as strength, thermal stability, and resistance to chemicals.
  3. Elastomeric Blocks: The elastomeric blocks (polybutadiene or polyisoprene) provide elasticity, flexibility, and resilience to the polymer, making it suitable for applications requiring stretchability and impact resistance.
  4. Properties: SBCs exhibit a wide range of properties depending on the ratio and arrangement of the styrenic and elastomeric blocks. They can vary from hard and glassy materials to soft and rubber-like elastomers.
  5. Applications: Due to their versatile properties, SBCs are used in various industries, including:
    • Adhesives: Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and hot-melt adhesives.
    • Sealants: Caulks and construction sealants.
    • Paving and roofing: Modified asphalt applications.
    • Footwear: Shoe soles and components.
    • Medical: Components in medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging.
    • Consumer goods: Toys, grips, and soft-touch applications.
    • Automotive: Gaskets, seals, and vibration-damping materials.
  6. Processing: SBCs can be processed and compounded using conventional thermoplastic methods like extrusion, injection molding, and blow molding, which makes them useful in a wide range of applications.

Overall, styrenic block copolymers are valued for their balance of mechanical properties, ease of processing, and broad applicability across various industries, contributing to their widespread use in both consumer and industrial products.
