Decarbonization journey

Kraton has been at the forefront of decarbonization in the chemical industry for over a decade. Through strategic initiatives and data-driven innovation, we’ve reduced our absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40% since 2014. From energy audits and electrification to renewable energy adoption, our efforts continue to evolve, driving meaningful progress toward a more sustainable future.

Decarbonization Spotlight

Our Oulu, Finland and Sandarne, Sweden manufacturing facilities have been 100% fossil-free since 2023. As a result, we’ve reduced our pine chemical manufacturing emissions by 10.6%.

Building our decarbonization roadmap

Kraton conducted audits across all manufacturing sites to identify opportunities for energy efficiency and decarbonization. Based on these assessments, each operating site received tailored recommendations outlining potential decarbonization measures. These measures include:

  • Heat Systems Management
  • Waste Heat and/or Steam Recovery
  • Electrification of our Production Processes
  • Considerations for Alternative Fuels
  • Fuel Switch Assessment

Renewable Energy Procurement

A comprehensive market study reviewed regional and site-specific options for adopting renewable electricity at each location, which provided the foundation for lowering Scope 2 emissions and sets the stage for updating our decarbonization strategy. Our achievements already include fully fossil-free operations at our sites in Oulu, Finland and Sandarne, Sweden.
