Paving the Way
to Innovation

PAVING SOLUTIONS

Growing traffic and harsh climates demand solutions for safer, more sustainable infrastructure. Kraton innovations for bitumen modification enable the development of durable, cost-effective roads by reducing time and expenses related to maintenance, construction delays and traffic problems.

As a pioneer in bitumen modification, our products and global supply network allow for the delivery of superior performance, processability and reliable supply. Asphalt mixes with binders modified by our polymers and chemicals are also recyclable, minimizing environmental impact. Kraton polymer modification options are specifically designed for paving applications. Our styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymers address rutting and cracking issues and are ideal for hot and cold climates, creating longer lasting, more efficient roads.

TECHNOLOGIES

Polymer Modified
Bitumen (PMB)

These two categories encompass polymer loading levels of 2-6 wt.% of SBS in bitumen. As the modification level increases, the bitumen becomes increasingly better at resisting high-temperature deformation and intermediate temperature cracking.

HIMA™

Highly Modified Asphalt (HiMA™) is designed to enhance durability and processability in asphalt pavement applications. The technology has more than twice the polymer loading of ordinary asphalt, which makes the asphalt act like asphalt-modified rubber instead of rubber-modified asphalt.

Emulsions

Emulsions are developed using HiMA™, conventional or premium PMB, and adding water plus emulsifier. SBS is blended into the base asphalt before emulsification. As opposed to modification with water-based, latex polymer dispersions.

PAVEMENT RECYCLING

SYLVAROAD™ RP1000 Performance Additive enables high-end reuse of recycled asphalt. The additive improves resource efficiency by reducing the need for new aggregates and bitumen, and significantly decreasing environmental impact produced by road construction.

CASE STUDIES

Case Study #1
1ST AVENUE NYC
HIMA™ REFIT

Paving and maintaining New York City
streets is unusually challenging. Many of
the streets are in poor condition with
aging concrete and old, delicate utility
infrastructure underneath.

Case Study #2
ALASKA STYMIES
STUDDED TIRES

Rutting caused by studded tire wear is
a serious problem in the American Pacific
Northwest, costing states like Alaska
millions of dollars annually in damage to
both asphalt and concrete roads. See how
Kraton HIMA™ technology helped this
problem.

Case Study #3
INTERSTATE
HIGHWAY 40
OKLAHOMA, USA

One particularly troublesome problem was
a two-mile section of the Interstate in
Oklahoma. The Department of
Transportation (ODOT) decided to address
the rutting problem by using HiMA™
technology.

Case Study #4
MASTIC BRIDGE
DECK Poland

In 2015, GDDKiA Olsztyn signed a
contract with Budimex for a bypass and
expressway around the city of Ostróda.
The project consisted of several
bridges, including an extra dosed bridge.
The construction required the highest quality,
sustainable, and rut-resistant bridge
deck pavement.

PAVING PROCESS

STEP 1

Products

Selecting materials for asphalt pavements primarily depends on forecasted load and climatic conditions. Kraton’s broad and diversified portfolio of performance polymers offers unique solutions to any type of paving application.

STEP 2

Bitumen Modification

The process of combining polymers with bitumen depends on multiple factors including bitumen chemistry, polymer type/content, blending temperature or intended material application. Getting this step done correctly is critical for long-term pavement performance.

STEP 3

MIX PRODUCTION-CONSTRUCTION

In the final stages of the paving process, aggregates are coated with polymer modified bitumen. The resulting asphalt mix is transported to the paving site, and compacted into a brand new pavement.

SUSTAINABILITY

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Kraton technologies are 100% recyclable and maximize the present value of pavement projects by extending pavement life cycle while reducing maintenance expenses. Our pavement solutions are easy to implement and minimize maintenance needs, reducing the overall economic burden.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Roads are the most important means for people to travel - making them fundamental to a well-functioning society. Kraton contributes to this aspect of social development by making roads better and more affordable.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Kraton's polymers are fully recyclable and pavement constructed with our solutions have a lower carbon footprint due to extended pavement life and minimal maintenance. Our technologies can also be constructed at normal to low paving temperatures.
